The advantages for telecommuting programs are increased workday flexibility, work-life balanced, and easier accommodations of communications across time zones.
Increase workday flexibility is an advantage because it allows them the ability to do the job anytime of the day and the ability to do it at home if they need to stay at home for the day. This is a really good thing because it allows the worker time to relax and not be stressed all the time.
Work-life balanced is an advantage for telecommuting because it allows the working member of a family to be able to spend time with their family and work the hours that early in the morning or late evening or even during the regular day time all depending on when family is around. It is a nice thing because it allows the family to stay close and not have to worry that the working member wont be late getting home from work.
Easier accommodations of communicating through time zones is another thing that helps telecommuting programs because it allows the workers to be able to be mobile and be able to chat from the east coast to the west coast past the usual hours and still be able to handle the situations with out any problems.
The disadvantages for telecommuting programs are organizational and individual benefits, managerial and behavioral obstacles and isolation.
Benefits of organizational and individual affect telecommuting programs by how much the cost of items needed. Those items needed where portable equipment, remote access, and possibly have to hire the help desk workers to work more hours so they could help the employees at anytime.
Managerial and behavioral obstacles affect telecommuting programs by the companies having to redesign performance appraisal systems that focused on the levels of performance of the company. Another reason it affects telecommuting is because the company feels like they are weakened if they hire less experience compared to those experienced already for the job.
Also telecommuting programs are affected by the fact that it is isolated. With the workers feeling isolated, they become less known and lose opportunities for other jobs or other information needed to do the job they already are doing. Also with being isolated the workers don’t get the opportunities to be in social interaction or activities and that could hurt the job quality in the long run.
